Samsung SmartThings Integration

Anyone have any experience with REX Controls and SmartThings?

My mind is going wild on all the possibilities with this, and I think it is possible but I would like to be able to do this in a direct method on local LAN instead of having to use NODE Red as a gateway.

I have a current isolated automation project that I would like to be able to integrate into the rest of my home and security automation in the future. This also brings me to the idea of having another REX Project as the master controller for the SmartThings controller / Gateway device.

If anyone has any insights on a great way to attack this, or any solutions, that would be awesome and I would love to read about it.

Thanks,

Re: Samsung SmartThings Integration

Dear gizmo,
I have no experience with Samsung SmartThings, but I'd try to find out if the individual devices can send out HTTP GET/POST requests. Then it would be possible to do what you need. You mentioned NodeRED as gateway - what would be the interface or communication protocol between SmartThings and NodeRED?

What API or communication protocol does the SmartThings Controller/Gateway support? REST API? MQTT? Anything else?

Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Samsung SmartThings Integration

Dear Jaroslav,

Think you for your response. I too am very new to the SmartThings HUB/GATEWAY, since I have first wrote on this topic I have been researching as much as I can when I can.

In my findings on the developer documentations, it seems that this unit does indeed support REST API, and SOAP.

From my understanding on a local LAN, only HTTP POST / GET / PUSH and I am sure this is not all.

From my understanding from cloud based API's, almost any protocol can be ported.

As for NodeRED, this is basically a cloud based API that is protocol ported to communicate with ST. In the sense of IFTTT being the bridge between the two.
Another option I have found is smartthings-mqtt-bridge, this is a RESTful endpoint hosted by ST API/Portal using the cloud interface smartapp.

Seems that I have much to learn about the ST unit. But I would say this looks very promising. My first thought of a goal was just port my current REX project into ST as a device. But this is just not satisfying enough for me so now the new G&O is to start a new REX project to be the master controller / handler for the complete smart home and have the ST Gateway be the bridge between Z-Wave, ZigBee, X-10, and all other smart devices.

Thanks Again, and I will post any updates as soon as I have some solid solutions,

Gizmo
